Mbalax-events in Rotterdam

Mbalax is the national popular dance music of Senegal and The Gambia, emerging in the 1970s from the fusion of traditional Wolof Sabar drumming with Western jazz, soul, and Latin influences. It is characterized by high-energy, complex polyrhythmic patterns led by the percussive attack of the Sabar and Tama talking drums, often accompanied by syncopated electric guitars and synthesizers. The genre's mood is intensely celebratory and kinetic, serving as a primary medium for social commentary and cultural identity in West Africa. This sophisticated rhythmic language distinguishes it from other African pop styles, bridging the gap between ancient percussion traditions and modern electronic production.
