Norwegian Jazz-events vanavond in Rotterdam

Norwegian jazz, often referred to as the "Nordic Tone," emerged as a distinct aesthetic in the late 1960s, largely shaped by the ECM Records sound and the influence of musicians like Jan Garbarek. The genre typically blends traditional jazz instrumentation, such as saxophone and double bass, with electronic textures and elements from Norwegian folk music. Characterized by spacious, rubato-heavy rhythms and moderate tempos, its mood is frequently described as introspective, atmospheric, and crystalline, reflecting the stark landscapes of Scandinavia. It maintains a unique semantic position between avant-garde experimentation and ambient music, often prioritizing silence and texture over the frantic swing of American bebop.
