Riot Grrrl-events in Rotterdam

Emerging from the Pacific Northwest in the early 1990s, Riot Grrrl is an underground feminist hardcore punk movement that fuses do-it-yourself ethics with raw, political lyricism. The instrumentation typically features distorted electric guitars, aggressive drumming, and powerful, often screamed vocals that address systemic issues like sexism, abuse, and female empowerment. Characterized by its high-energy, fast-paced rhythms and unpolished production, the genre maintains a gritty aesthetic rooted in the visceral energy of classic punk and indie rock. This movement served as a pivotal bridge between late-twentieth-century alternative music and third-wave feminism, creating a defiant space for women's voices within the male-dominated punk scene.
