Spiritual Jazz-concerten en liveshows in Rotterdam

Emerging in the 1960s as a subset of free jazz and post-bop, spiritual jazz seeks to evoke transcendence and cosmic consciousness through musical exploration. Pioneers like John Coltrane and Pharoah Sanders moved beyond standard harmonic structures, favoring modal vamps and non-Western instrumentation such as harps, bells, and sitars. The rhythm often shifts between steady, meditative pulses and chaotic, polyrhythmic explosions, maintaining a mood that oscillates between serene contemplation and ecstatic intensity. This genre serves as a bridge between the cerebral complexities of avant-garde jazz and the deep emotional resonance of religious or philosophical expression, often emphasizing a sense of universal unity.
