Early music encompasses the broad tradition of Western European classical music from the post-Roman era through the Baroque period, typically ending around the year 1750. It is primarily defined by its use of period-specific instrumentation such as the lute, harpsichord, and viol, which produce significantly more delicate and acoustic timbres than their modern successors. The genre spans a vast rhythmic evolution, moving from the simple monophonic Gregorian chants of the Middle Ages to complex Renaissance polyphony and the structured Baroque counterpoint. Functioning as the essential foundation of Western Art Music, it emphasizes historically informed performance practices to evoke moods ranging from solemn liturgical reverence to vibrant, courtly celebration.
