Ndombolo emerged in the Democratic Republic of the Congo during the mid-1990s as a fast-paced evolution of soukous and Congolese rumba, primarily designed for high-energy social dancing in the clubs of Kinshasa. The genre is defined by intricate, interlocking electric guitar patterns known as the sebene, complemented by driving basslines, synthesizers, and the rhythmic chants of an animateur who directs the dance floor. Its tempo is typically brisk, featuring syncopated 4/4 rhythms that prioritize physical movement and celebratory expression over melodic complexity. While it shares roots with traditional African folk, ndombolo represents a modernized, percussion-heavy approach that influenced various contemporary African popular music scenes including Afrobeats and Coupé-Décalé.
