Russian Chanson-events deze week in Tallinn

Russian chanson emerged in the early 20th century from an amalgamation of urban romances, folk ballads, and blatnaya pesnya or outlaw songs within the Soviet Union. Characterized by soulful storytelling and melancholic melodies, the genre relies on acoustic guitars, accordions, and narrative vocals that explore themes of hardship, prison life, and nostalgic yearning. Its rhythmic structure is generally moderate, employing simple time signatures to keep the lyrical content at the forefront of the performance. While distinct from French tradition, it occupies a unique sociocultural space between mainstream pop and underground folk, reflecting the raw emotional grit of the Russian collective experience and historical struggle.
