Afropop-events in Utrecht

Afropop is a broad category of contemporary African popular music that originated in the late 20th century, particularly within West African urban centers like Lagos and Accra. It blends traditional percussion and polyrhythmic heritage from genres like highlife and jùjú with modern Western instrumentation, including synthesizers, drum machines, and electric guitars. The music is characterized by infectious, syncopated 4/4 beats typically at a moderate tempo, creating a celebratory and euphoric mood designed for dancefloors. While it shares structural similarities with global pop and R&B, Afropop maintains a distinct sonic identity through its localized vocal dialects and the integration of indigenous melodic patterns, serving as a primary cultural export for the continent.
