Algerian Chaabi-events deze week in Utrecht

Algerian Chaabi emerged from the Casbah of Algiers in the early 1920s as a popular urban adaptation of classical Arab-Andalusian music. It typically centers on the metallic resonance of the Algerian mandole, frequently accompanied by violins, banjos, pianos, and traditional percussion like the derbouka and tar. The genre expertly balances soulful, melancholic vocal improvisations known as m'shalia with upbeat, rhythmic sections that serve as a powerful vessel for poetic social commentary. Rooted in historical Sanaa traditions, Chaabi bridges the gap between scholarly court music and the gritty, expressive realities of the Algerian working class, ultimately paving the way for the development of modern Rai.
