Bolero-events in Utrecht

Originating in Spain in the late 18th century before evolving significantly in Cuba during the late 19th century, bolero is a quintessential Latin music genre characterized by its romantic and sentimental lyrical themes. Typical instrumentation features the nylon-string guitar and requinto, often accompanied by soft percussion like maracas and bongos to create an intimate, sophisticated atmosphere. It is defined by a slow to moderate tempo, frequently utilizing a distinctive 4/4 time signature in the Cuban tradition or a 3/4 meter in its Spanish origins. As a foundational pillar of Latin pop, it maintains a close semantic relationship with the ballad and trova, serving as the definitive medium for expressing themes of heartbreak and longing.
