Aggrotech, also known as hellectro or harsh EBM, emerged in the late 1990s as a high-octane evolution of electro-industrial and dark electro. The genre is defined by its abrasive, distorted synthesizers, aggressive techno-influenced kick drums, and heavily processed, raspy vocals that frequently utilize vocoders or pitch-shifting effects. Maintaining a fast tempo typically ranging between 140 and 160 BPM, the music evokes a menacing, apocalyptic atmosphere tailored specifically for underground industrial dance floors. It shares a close semantic lineage with Electronic Body Music but distinguishes itself through a more chaotic, lo-fi aesthetic and relentless rhythmic intensity that bridges the gap between industrial noise and hard trance.
