African Rock-events dit weekend in Zurich

African Rock emerged during the late 1960s and 1970s as a vibrant fusion of Western psychedelic rock and traditional African musical structures, such as highlife and Afrobeat. This genre typically features a driving interplay between distorted electric guitars and complex, polyrhythmic percussion, often incorporating traditional instruments like talking drums alongside standard rock kits. The tempo is generally upbeat and syncopated, creating an energetic and often politically charged mood that bridges the gap between grassroots regional styles and global rock movements. Its sound is semantically linked to genres like Zamrock and Ethio-jazz, characterized by a unique grit and melodic fluidity that distinguishes it from its purely Western counterparts.
