Volksmusik-events in Zurich

Volksmusik is a traditional folk genre originating from the Alpine regions of Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and South Tyrol, deeply rooted in rural communal life. Its instrumentation typically features the accordion, zither, hammered dulcimer, and various brass instruments, often accompanied by yodeling or choral arrangements. The music is characterized by rhythmic structures such as the polka and waltz, maintaining a moderate to lively tempo that evokes a festive and nostalgic mood. While it serves as the authentic cultural foundation for the more commercialized volkstümliche musik, it remains distinct through its focus on local heritage and acoustic, non-electronic performance practices. This genre emphasizes a connection to the landscape and historical social gatherings, functioning as a vital expression of Central European identity.
