Keiharde politieagent Jack Cates is de enige overlevende van een schietpartij. Cates krijgt 48 uur om de moordenaar te vinden en heeft daarvoor de hulp nodig van de gangster Reggie Hammond, die hij voor die korte tijd uit de gevangenis haalt.
