Jody is een 20-jarige zwarte jongen die thuis woont bij z'n moeder. Hij heeft twee kinderen, bij twee verschillende moeders. Jody probeert het huis te verlaten, en een nieuwe relatie te beginnen met zijn huidige vriendin, maar zijn "baby momma's" zorgen ervoor dat dit niet goed lukt. It's tempting to call this a coming-of-age story, but age arrived years ago. Instead, Baby Boy finds its thesis in something much more complex, namely the existential mayhem that ensues when one realizes there's nothing left to do with life except to live it in its best and fullest form, a challenge no matter what your birth date happens to be. Singleton tailors the story to his own experience, effectively making a Douglas Sirk melodrama for young Black men, but every conflict is recognizable and relatable, and the ways in which he unpacks toxic masculinity and broken relationships in the process are just as potent a full twenty years later. From the original casting notes to the mural on Jody's wall, the memory of Tupac hangs over everything: get busy living, or get busy dying. That's goddamn right.
