the fact john singleton was 23 when he made this KING SHIT
I researched John Singleton's films prior to this one because I just had to know what other amazing things he directed/wrote that led him into making this wonderful film.As it turns out, this was Singleton's directorial debut and not only that, but directing this led him into becoming the FIRST African American and youngest director to be nominated for an Academy Award for Best Director. Like how amazing is that? Not only is the film a great cultural impact, but Singleton literally made history. And after watching this for the first time, it's obvious that he earned it. Another thing I didn't know was that this was Cuba Gooding Jr's first leading role in a movie, along with Ice Cube and Morris Chestnut making their acting debut as well. The 3 leading roles were all new to this yet they clearly acted their HEARTS out. It did have its humor at some points but it was also so dang emotional. There were actually a few scenes that had me on the verge of tears, and that's something that other veteran actors have yet to do.The film is really phenomenal, and although it does display a lot of America's problems (back then and today), the story is still a great coming of age film. I'm just glad it still resonates with a lot of people today.Definitely a film I recommend people watching, it's really important and I'll be thinking about this one for a while.
