A beautiful empathic early film with a primarily Black cast with no mammies or butlers (the help) in sight. Dorothy Dandridge is luminous as a grade school teacher trying to reach a student named CT, who's more interested in insects than school. There's a scene I couldn't help but to think of Candyman minus the trauma. Speaking of trauma, you won't find any of that here. That's not to say there isn't tragedy but exploitation is refreshingly absent. Watching Bright Road was like a warm hug. I had never heard of it before. I'm glad Criterion is making these gems available. At just over an hour it's an easy watch.Film is also notable for being Harry Belafonte's first and he's so handsome. He'd later star with Dandridge in Carmen Jones.
