Just two pals, rolling around on the floor of the church, staring into each other’s eyes with warm smiles, no homo no homo. What a gorgeous, deeply rich movie I’d never heard of until browsing Criterion, and I dunno if this sounds crazy but to me it really manages to express James Baldwin’s lyrical prose visually - and not just because James Bond III has to be the most immaculate casting choice ever as Baldwins stand-in. Ving Rhames is so young I almost didn’t recognize him and he turns out one of his best performances ever.
Always fun to find a made-for-tv movie that manages to be something special. Directed by Stan Lathan, father of Sanaa, without any of the pretensions of the bigger budgeted Baldwin adaptations that would follow it, Go Tell It manages to paint an unexpectedly complex portrait of flawed fatherhood and salvation. Paul Whitfield stands out as a man clinging to strength at the expense of anything tender, but the movie has other goods to offer, like its subtle hints at a budding tension between Giancarlo Esposito (five years before Do the Right Thing) and James Bond III (a stand in for Baldwin), its balanced views of the church, a riveting performance by an unaccredited singer and Desiree Coleman, and the empathy the movie holds for the long-suffering women in Whitfield's life.As I'm known to connect everything back to San Francisco, I'll note that James Bond III went on to direct a little-seen blaxploitation horror gem about a succubus praying on horny men before becoming a realtor in San Francisco, and after composing the walk-on song for WWE's Kelly Kelly (not exactly church music), Desiree Coleman would go on to marry former Golden State Warriors coach, Mark Jackson.
