"Married life is like dandruff - it falls heavily upon your shoulders - you get a lot of free advice about it - but up to date nothing has been found to cure it."In the case of Harold Lloyd versus the turkey: the nibbler wins.Once again, I'm presented with incontrovertible proof that Lloyd was the best of the big three silent comedians; for both tremendous laughs and a wholesome sweetness that never got too sappy, he couldn't be beat. Hot Water was one of his "gag pictures," meaning that it's a string of vignettes with barely any story and no character development to speak of - just a zippy, 59-minute snapshot of a day in the life of a married man doing battle with his intrusive in-laws - but it sure is a lot of fun while it lasts! Two other notes: the last ten minutes or so turn into a haunted house parody as Lloyd mistakenly believes that he has killed his mother-in-law with a chloroform overdose and her ghost has returned to spook him; also, while it's not always necessary to pay attention to how Lloyd uses his hands in films since he wasn't usually too conspicuous in trying to conceal his right hand - he wore a prosthetic glove to obscure the fact that he lost his thumb and index finger in a prop-related accident in 1919 - in the last fifteen or twenty minutes of this film, there are several moments when he's clearly hiding his right hand or balling it into a fist while the left hand is used to make any required gestures. It's always interesting to see how actors adapt to changes in their physicality, and Lloyd certainly was admirable for soldiering on after the incident and creating the cinema gems we now know and love.
Important part of Lloyd movies is that he plays a dork but NEVER a weakling. Always carries a woman with no effort somehow. That's my GOAT <3
