My favorite part was when he zooms in on a jar of pickled onions and says, “When I saw pickled onions in the supermarket, my heart leapt in the air. I love pickled onions.”
"it's not the art of motion pictures, it's the business — it's show business" – Marlon Brando preaching capitalism as Tony Kaye is having a philosophical meltdown over final cut on his film (and, for the record, this doc is better than American History X by a significant margin)
A fuck-you to the 1990s-era "indie" movement (Tarantino and all the Weinstein darlings). A punk Dada bomb lobbed into Tribeca. An anti-film, a non-film, that finds honesty in the world again through negation, which is the province of the best films. Tony Kaye leads the way in the continuity-through-discontinuity movement. As Rossellini said of Chaplin's A KING IN NEW YORK, it's the film of a free man — who knows he is not free. And so he adores this state. What others see as newsprint and refuse of the city, he sees as gold. Galvanizing as hell.
