Earlier today, I was looking up Jack Nance for no real reason when I decided to check when and how he died. And that's really the reason why I decided to watch this documentary. And then the screaming started...The thing about this is that I had big trouble trying to find it. But here's a tip so you don't have to suffer as well in case you want to watch it: google the title and the year. One of the first results should be a reddit post from several years ago that includes a link to a now dead youtube video. Copy the link and go to internet archive's wayback machine. Then go to one of the calendar dates in 2014 and you're set. One of the most insane ways of watching a movie, but it works and I am here to pass the knowledge. Just make sure to not pause too much because it takes a while for it to resume. Oh and don't get alerted by the adobe flash window displayed, just sit back and wait for a bit, the video will load. This is also a proof that nothing stands in the way of me watching a movie.Now onto the actual talk about the movie. Mainly, it's very interesting, because I knew about Nance purely through David Lynch, so this was a nice way of expanding my knowledge about him. It features many interviews done by his friends, family and co-workers. A very heartfelt documentary that made me tear up at several points.

As much as I may have wished I was Brad Pitt in Interview with the Vampire I was always Jack Nance in Eraserhead. Sometimes something in your life leaves such an impression and becomes so personal you cannot bear to discuss it with anyone. Some of us are just born strange, lonely souls. As I dealt with the anxiety of becoming a father and everything that followed in the next 3 years I would never feel more like a character than Henry Spencer.Watching this doc I stay between a laugh and a cry. Fuzzy reality for all us weird loner types. The sensitive, droll and cynical southern gentlemen of this country will never be as cool as Jack. We can walk on the edge of rooftops. We can sit alone in rooms with closed curtains. We can feel betrayed and wish to escape this world but we'll never be the one-of-a-kind Mr. Nance."Get in the stall horseface!"This isn't a particularly well made documentary. But that was never the goal. It was a tribute. This is a collection of vignettes and accounts in the wake of Jack's passing to reflect on a man apart. Compassionate reflections and grievous tellings of moments in time.There's something about watching this motley crew of friends and family describe their life knowing Jack. It has a very entrancing quality for me. Like an old home VHS tape. Wayne Grace is especially humorous here in his storytelling and impression of Jack. Obviously, Catherine Coulson was a wonderful woman and had a long history with him as his first wife.The southern fried soundtrack reminded me of my father's passing and compliments the doc's vibe of an enigmatic eulogy."You know that was just his style. He liked - to - tell - it - realll - slow, and make a point."Charlotte Stewart just rings true and I truly enjoy her classy reflections. There's bible passages or verses sprinkled throughout the chapters and it fits well within the context. "Your friend is an alcoholic. He has the body of a 50 year-old (he was 30). He has liver spots and he's going to keep drinking until he kills himself or until he wants to change things."- A Doctor's diagnoses of JackDennis Hopper here is very composed and tells the story of helping get his fellow actor into rehab.The story of Jack Nance and Kelly Van Dyke is very heart crushing. Her suicide would help break him.Give strong drink unto him that is ready to perish and wine unto those with heavy heartsPROVERBS 31:6This is for fans specifically. But if you don't know Jack maybe you should get to know him a little. I'm going to go listen to Horowitz play Moonlight Sonata and watch the sunset. I realised that despite having watched Eraserhead numerous times over the years, I’ve continued to know next to nothing about its star Jack Nance, other than that he was one of David Lynch’s frequent collaborators. So, this appropriately titled obscure doc, which features Lynch as one of its talking heads, helped me get up to speed with the events of Jack’s life as well as reminding me of the rest of his work with David.It’s clear from the anecdotes and the laughter and tears, and the way his friends and family recall him with genuine affection, that Jack was much loved by those who knew him, even if it sounds like he’d have been a bit of a nightmare to be around during his more troubled alcoholic years. I like that Jack’s self-destructive streak didn’t stop David from remaining loyal to him.Learning about Jack’s life, it dawned on me that there were some autobiographical in-jokes relating to some of the characters David created for him, so I’m looking forward to revisiting those in the coming days.
