Well, that was disturbing! Didn't expect this to mess me up as much as it did but here we are. So ahead of its time visually, too. It's times like this where I just hate ratings bc while it's very flawed, I can't deny how into it I was and how much it, again, disturbed me. Sheesh!
Jigoku is without a doubt one of the most visually and thematically pessimistic movies in history. In the Jigoku world of extreme despair and torment, everyone sins and everyone deserves to be tortured forever in hell, and it certainly leaves nothing to the imagination when depicting the terrifying after life every living soul is inherently scared of.In this daunting story of death-oriented nature, a car accident starts a malignant chain reaction, resulting in the death of almost every character that runs into its path. Dropping like flies is no longer an exaggeration in this wildly supernatural journey, where devil himself even contributes to the morbid game of misery and suffering. Yet the story hasn't reached its true climax until its thrilling hell scenes, where every victim embroiled in the devil's master plan must go through gruesome tortures for their humanly sins. With an effective eerie cinematography and soul-crunchingly graphic visual effects, director Nobuo Nakagawa showed his scathingly critical opinions of the human world, by creating his own twisted version of hell and karma that's far more than enough to scar every human being indiscriminatingly. Other than its final twenty minutes or so, where it mysteriously ventures into the strange realm of "Taken" with almost laughable repetitiveness, Jigoku is memorable enough as a cult classic and probably didactic enough to prevent every audience member from committing any sin ever again. Highly recommended.
Een groep zondaars verwikkeld in verschillende misstanden en tragedies komt uiteindelijk samen in de surrealistische en gruwelijke kwellingen van de boeddhistische hel.
