Holy s*** this exists. Has this been sampled by hip hop artists? White actors pretend to be black people who pretend to be white people. There’s some choice quotes in this that I can’t repeat. Also the narrator makes a point of telling us that the daughter is ugly (!?!) Would make a good double feature with Shadows or that episode of Seinfeld.
The story is quite interesting and the fact that it's based on true events adds to the lore. Unfortunately, the script and acting are bad. I watched this based solely on the fact that most of the scenes were filmed in NH and ME in locations I am familiar with. The story sucked me in but the horrendous acting snatched me out. This story could be remade today with better actors. The racial themes are, unfortunately, still very relevant today.
Racial awareness is clearly on the agenda in 1949. Based on a true story of a light-skinned black man who poses as white to become a local doctor of a New Hampshire town. The absence of any stars help give it some authenticity, and it does feel like it's got a lot of important things to say, but it is also a drama very much on the dry side. More a important movie than good.
