Another shining example on why Guillermo del Toro should be allowed to do whatever he wants
I’m feeling somewhat better and I’m still on this 90’s kick because this time period is often considered a bad time for horror, but it’s a damn lie because I’ve been on the nostalgia train with some great movies this week. Choo choo bitches.Anyway...cockroaches, amiright?! I have no problem with spiders or rats or snakes, but you show me a cockroach and my scream will make your ears bleed. They are just the worst. Because of my entirely irrational fear of these creatures, you’d think I wouldn’t be able to watch this movie, but for some reason I can and I really like it. I can’t watch Joe’s Apartment without freaking the f*ck out, but I can do this. Maybe it’s because roaches are understandably portrayed as a potentially apocalyptic problem in this movie?I love the dark, grimy NY look of this. It was made after the city went all family friendly, but all the night time and underground scenes really help create that 80’s scuzzy bleak NY that I love watching in my movies. This is early del Toro and he knew how to bring it then just as much as he does now. The effects are pretty dated, but I don’t remember thinking that when this came out. That is one issue that many 90’s movies have. They came out when the technology boom was just getting started so there are wildly varying degrees of effects quality, and really all of them look pretty basic by today’s standards so I don’t usually hold it against a movie. The cast is aces and I f*cking LOVE Mira Sorvino. I always wondered why she disappeared from the radar for so long and then I find out that it was because of Harvey #&@?%! Weinstein and that really really really pisses me off. She was on track to become a megawatt star and he blacklisted her probably because she wouldn’t go to his hotel room. She’s amazing, beautiful, funny, sweet, and she’s a megawatt star to me so F*CK YOU Harvey. You don’t mess with Romy. I was so happy to see her on Lady Dynamite and I hope she’s got a full schedule lined up for the future. Wow I’m drifting again. This is a great and very underrated dark movie. If you have a ridiculous fear of roaches I’d still say you should watch it because I’m almost certain that nobody is more terrified of them than me and I love this movie. I mean, really it’s a major thing for me. I probably need to see a therapist about it. The last time I saw one I started wielding a Dust Devil minivac in one hand at all times like Ash with his chainsaw. True story.
