Andreï Zviaguintsev brilliantly transposes Unfaithful — and therefore Chabrol's The Unfaithful Wife — onto modern Russia, freighting a very familiar adultery plot with blithe and immense new weight as it plays out against the war in Ukraine. colossal. staggering. features the single most unexpected Anohni needle drop in cinema history (not that there's a ton of competition for that particular title, alas). even at a good Cannes this would be a nearly automatic Palme d'Or winner.
MINOTAUR is another bleak, methodical, and politically charged work from Russian filmmaker Andrey Zvyagintsev. Taking inspiration from “The Unfaithful Wife,” it reframes its intimate story of infidelity into a grander political fable set in modern Russia during the fallout of the Russo-Ukrainian war, exploring themes of power, control, and masculinity. Dmitriy Mazurov and Iris Lebedeva both deliver solid performances, while Mikhail Krichman’s cold yet precise camerawork creates a purposefully dreadful sense of inevitability hanging over the meticulously told story.
