De vader van Sir Robert Cargrave blijkt net voor zijn overlijden de hoofdprijs in de loterij te hebben gewonnen, maar werd met ticket en al in zijn graf gelegd. Cargrave besluit zijn vader weer op te graven, maar als hij het graf opent, bevriest zijn gezicht plotseling in een gruwelijke, sadistische glimlach.

Is Mr Sardonicus William Castle's masterpiece? The film focuses on an English doctor who travels to Europe to treat a man with a strange facial affliction. The film takes in themes of greed, guilt and medicine. It takes influence from films that went before (Eyes Without a Face) but this is very much it's own piece of work. The story is delivered slowly and is very restrained. Castle forsakes his usual gimmicks (until the very end!) The plot is involving in the way it is delivered; a Gothic horror tale that plays out like Frankenstein or something similar. Mr Sardonicus cuts a tragic figure - a man consumed by guilt and then twisted into a monster by his physical affliction. Top work on the make-up job aswell! Castle's story makes a villain out of ghouls (grave robbers) and then the title character himself. There's also a commentary on medicine and the relationship with the mind. Plenty to think about for a hokey Gothic horror story!
