A bleak, atmospheric thriller.
Julia Ross vindt via een nogal luidruchtig uitzendbureau een baan bij een rijke weduwe en gaat bij haar thuis wonen. Twee dagen later wordt ze wakker in een ander huis, in andere kleren en met een nieuwe identiteit.

Got the excruciatingly tense noir abut the slippery, theatrical nature of identity I was sort of expecting but also an anxious, straight-up gothic horror story on gaslighting and wage slavery featuring a creepy mother-son murder duo. Pretty ahead of its time and Lewis was a spectacular visual filmmaker on a budget; love that dissolve from lion door knocker to the poison tea set, that blurry over-the-shoulder composition of Julia's face almost entirely cut off by her abuser except for her scared, helpless eyes, all the shadowy imagery of her in the cliffside mansion that make her seem trapped in a ghostly prison labyrinth... "People can think themselves into anything." Happy Criterion Channel day everyone! Full discussion on ep 294 of my podcast SLEAZOIDS.
Hi, my name's Jake. Um, a little bit about myself: I fucking LOVE 1940s movies that narrativize society's casual oppression of women by foregrounding how easily their very identities can be overridden.
A young woman is hired as a live-in secretary for a wealthy widow, only to wake up two days later in a different house where everyone insists she is actually the widow's daughter-in-law.
The film was directed by Joseph H. Lewis, an American filmmaker known for his work in the B-movie and crime genres during the 1940s.
