trigger warning: some heavy stuffso, kirk douglas died. an hour ago or so ago. roughly.(i don't want to talk about him. at least for now.)natalie wood has always seemed like such a special person to me. she's radiant even in still photographs. her smile is infectious. she's beautiful but her eyes are kind and i think that's more important. natalie wood suffered a life-time of abuse from hollywood men.i don't feel like we talk about that a lot. she's just a gorgeous old actress who appeared in some classic films. she can be summarized by a gifset maybe or a stolid memorial. it's easy to side-step around the fact that she claimed that she was raped by a powerful insider when she was a teenager. she was too frightened to ever report it but it haunted her for the rest of her life. it's fun to whisper about her mysterious death, isn't it? it's less fun to reckon with the fact that two men, at the very least, stood by and did nothing while she drowned.i don't want to say this so that she'll be flattened down into a victim. i don't want to define her extraordinary life simply by the people who hurt her. i want to remember her. i want to remember the actress and the woman and the daughter and the sister and the lover. look, i know i said i don't want to talk about kirk douglas and really i don't- but i also want justice. (please google if you are confused by what i am talking about.) i want a world where no one needs to be afraid and where people face the consequences. i don't want to curl into myself and look at cute photos of natalie wood and smile a little at a tweet commemorating how great kirk douglas was in spartacus. fuck that. honor natalie wood. be kind to each other. look out for abusers. call out what you can. listen to people who are hurting. make it so that no one is ever afraid to speak up ever again. make it so that powerful people no longer have the space to skulk in the shadows and hurt others. kill your darlings. great actors can be bad people. never idolize someone who you don't know.and rest easy, natalie. as i said on twitter, i hope you found the peace in the next life that you couldn't in this one. i want to remember you. as an actress and a person. all my love.
