I am not a big crier in the movies but from about 35 minutes in through until the end, this thing sent me to outer space. Tender, personal, warm, careful. So, so, so full of love. I can think of so many different entry points to this and all the deeply precious conversations to have afterwards. More funny people should care about voice acting like this.
Fell totally in love with this. The art style takes a different route than Sarah Leavitt’s original work, but still feels so authentic to the story that is being shared, maybe especially during the surreal moments. Has the sort of 90s-grunge, San Francisco dyke aesthetics that I just adore seeing on screen. Felt very seen by how Tangles tackles its depictions of queerness, the weight of being the oldest, and having to unexpectedly care for those who raised you. Obviously depicts a lot of the progression of Alzheimers very well, but I was especially struck by how the film nails the vulnerable anguish of having to bathe someone for the first time, trying to choke down your grief to ensure they maintain their dignity. Was instantly transported back to when my sisters and I were caring for our grandmother. Beautiful film. Would watch a dozen more times even though it turned me into a blubbering mess.
A devastating call-your-mom cryer. People are going to connect with this very personally and deeply. Even though it puts you through the wringer, it balances that with a sweet queer love story and grounded sense of humor. There are some abstract animated sequences here that are stunning. Will go down as one of 2026’s best animated films
