A vampire film drenched in eroticism and, above all, atmosphere, this one leans heavily into mood over narrative. It often plays like a hazy giallo, unfolding with a dreamlike logic where everything feels slightly off-kilter. That tone is beautifully realized through Fernando Arribas’ glossy, almost hypnotic cinematography, which gives the film a surreal, otherworldly sheen. At its center is a predatory presence—a roaming vampire whose encounters blur desire and danger—set against a backdrop of strange occurrences and a long-buried act of violence slowly coming to light. The cast delivers solid work across the board. While the performances may not be especially showy, they effectively capture the film’s sense of disorientation and unease, particularly the central female leads, who anchor the story’s eerie emotional core.If there’s a downside, it’s that the film occasionally gets lost in its own rhythm. While the mood and intrigue carry it for long stretches, there are moments where it feels like it’s circling the same ideas, with not much progression, which can make parts of it drag. All in all, even if it never quite lives up to the promise of its striking poster, it’s still a compelling watch. If you’re in the mood for a stylish, dreamlike vampire film with strong giallo influences, this is definitely one worth checking out.TODAY SCHEDULEThe Tale of the FoxSPL: KillzoneThe Blood Spattered Bride
Based on the title, I went into this thinking it was a giallo, but it’s not. At all. Instead, it’s a supremely surreal kinda vampirish movie with some social commentary undertones about gender and sexuality. In other words, completely NOT a giallo in any sense. Still, it’s quite good! The story about a sexually repressed newlywed wife who turns to a mysterious seductress for comfort is based on “Carmilla” which I didn’t even know was a thing until I watched this. I looked it up and now I do so don’t judge me. All of my extra memory space is devoted to horror movies so it actually makes sense that it would take a horror movie to teach me about a literary work, right? Anyway, it’s a SUPER slow burn. Possibly too slow for most because I love slow burn movies and, on occasion, this was even too slow for me. Fortunately, there are more than enough awesome scenes and parts to balance things out. Plus, I really loved that bleak and ominous ending. The acting was great although I have to say that while I love Simon Andreu in anything, I think I prefer him as the sleazier sexual predator of Forbidden Photos of a Lady Above Suspicion over the less sleazy and much less predatory one here. There’s not enough swagger in his character and he does swagger with the best of them.Definitely worth checking out for fellow lovers of that surreal downbeat 70’s vibe. Just don’t let the title fool you and you won’t be disappointed.Side Note: I’m 100% #teamsimon for the “Simon Andreu vs. Angelina Jolie Greatest Lips Ever Contest” that should totally be a thing.

Ja, de film is een bewerking van de klassieke gothic novelle Carmilla van Sheridan Le Fanu.
