De poolbiljarter Fast Eddie Felson vindt de jonge, veelbelovende speler Vincent in een plaatselijke bar, en ziet in hem een jongere versie van zichzelf. Om oude tijden weer te laten herleven, biedt Eddie aan om Vincent te trainen. Vincent besluit het aanbod aan te nemen en Eddie neemt Vincent en zijn vriendin mee op een tour door het land. in the last year i’ve gotten back into billiards and have played a good amount at one of the iconic chicago locations they shot this in, making this rewatch a lot more engaging than my first time where this was one of three scorsese films i was watching a day. still pretty tame and unremarkable if you’re going to look at it next to the rest of his filmography, but i really couldn’t take my eyes off this thing. works best when it’s just 10 minutes straight of really well-edited pool with blues playing in the background, that final act is honestly mesmerizing. vince wearing a shirt that says “vince” is hilarious. the brief scene where eddie is swimming, just to show he is truly the master of ALL forms of pool!!a somewhat by the books gambling/addiction/masculinity story but scorsese always manages to make it feel a lot slimier than anything else out there, eddie felson is a fascinating character. we’re due for a new billiards film and i REALLY wanna make it. all this said, i gotta watch the hustler.
