The thing I love about Biller's movies is their unreconstructed nature. She's not so much subverting the movies and works her films emulate, she's elaborating on them, enjoying them, and talking to them. Though they appear coated in irony I really don't detect any. This is deeply felt and also deeply funny (although I don't think she's trying to make a comedy), lovely to look at, and the anger it holds for its genuinely diabolical villains is literal and earnest even while it laughs at them. Subtlety be damned. A delight.
