Now there's a look in your eyeslike black holes in the skyWhen the sex is so good I just kill myself.
A fascinating film to reckon with. Begins by establishing our lead character as someone who is happily married with both wife and child, before suddenly whisking him away to a city where he is alone, completely separated from the near-idealistic home in which Borowczyk has previously established. The man almost immediately begins an affair with a sex worker, but with this development we're never given a moment to ponder the 'whys'. Here sex is both a sacred act and a capitalist commodity, and there's something extremely truthful about the lack of both motivation and guilt found within these long drawn out, elegantly rendered sexual liaisons that the film is built upon. These elongated sex scenes serve two purposes, being both extremely sensual and almost embarrassingly earnest (each one being scored by straight-faced 70's synth-rock), but also quietly subversive in the way they consciously single in on the relationship between customer and provider (the first encounter showing Kristel clasp her payment throughout the entire act). In this way Borowczyk's film is amazingly complex in it's treatment of sex, never shying away from it's sensuous beauty, but also acknowledging that this beauty can be built upon pure falsity - the act of sex can be transcendent regardless of context, but the context in and of itself can be just as fascinating. Probably underrating this.
