Herrieschopper en gitarist Dewey Finn droomt ervan de rockwedstrijd Battle of the Bands winnen. Zijn collega's gooien hem echter uit de groep. Dewey zit nu depressief te wezen in zijn huis, waarvan de huur ook al maanden niet meer betaald is.
