First off, this was the amount of cock I was expecting from “Rotting In The Sun”, based off the way the hyperbolic American press sold its most ‘scandalous’ scenes…Plentiful dicks on display aside, “The Summer With Carmen” is thankfully also a delightfully funny, self-aware, sexy, frothy romp and a metatextual twist on the Gay Movie™. It’s not particularly deep, but I was still really charmed by the breezy, infectious tone of this one. To begin with, it looks stun — whether that’s just the result of a picturesque central location doing the heavy lifting — but the compositions also look lovely and the vivid colour palette really pops. Even the highly stylised title designs that frequently appear are very aesthetically pleasing. Then we have an incredibly hot and affable lead in Demosthenes, played by Yorgos Tsiantoulas — equal measure very woofable (I’d be remiss to not mention dat ass or the plentiful peen regularly seen on-screen, in the interest of the prospective target audience’s attention), but also great with his understated comedic timing. Playing off him, Andreas Lampropoulos is equally as charismatic and beautiful, with his delicate features, as the more flamboyant Nikitas. But most of all, I love Carmen… 🐶 (Especially as a fellow 30-something gay who also regularly looks after my friend’s very tiny and very needy but very gorgeous dog, even though I don’t want the full-time commitment of her ownership, despite loving her very much!) Also loved seeing a healthy, platonic relationship between two gay men, with no unnecessary conflicted romantic feelings sullying the depiction. Really refreshing. All the Xavier Dolan digs (down to the out-of-focus “Mommy” poster in the background) had me cackling too…
