Howard Hawks' Only Angels Have Wings and John Huston's The Treasure of Sierra Madre grimly merged together in what is now considered one of the greatest pure white-knuckle procedural thriller situations ever conceived of due two equally masterful takes on Arnaud's authentic, explosive expatriate material: Clouzet's more effectively blunt and direct, Friedkin's more hysterically hellish and atmospheric. Still 70 years later among the bleakest, most expertly-crafted visions of what it might feel like to live inside intense, violent levels of precarity and expendability; grueling, primitive, existential, and—as written about ad nauseam (because it's true!)—unbearably tense. It's easy to see how the macho death drive and filthy, fatalistic desperation would eventually inspire just about everything Peckinpah but especially The Wild Bunch. And it's pretty crazy that it took nearly 40 of those 70 years for most audiences stateside to even see the complete version of this because of how depressingly and politically clear-eyed it was about the brutal exploitation of Latin America by American resource extraction/financial interests.Also, I love Sorcerer but I have to say this has one of the greatest titles of all time, and as much as the Tangerine Dream score is one of the best ever the use of silence/sound design here is pretty fantastic. It was also interesting watching the former first because it left me prepared for a lot of the incredible, physically arduous beats in this (the tire slipping through the rotting wood, the demolition of the boulder blocking the road) but I had somehow not been spoiled on those legs being crushed/amputated in the giant pool of oil. One of the cruelest, most unforgettable images I’ve ever seen. Full on ep 291 of my podcast SLEAZOIDS.
