A lot of this is very recognizable from Hamaguchi later better known work, but it does come offf a bit too conceptual to quite come through as wanted. I do appreciate the physicality of the action. The Kiyoshi Kurosawa influence is more pronounced as well.
Touch. Please don’t touch. Body swerve. Spatial awareness. Dance. Ritual. Cling to the surface of the world and listen. Discover through observation. “You’re the fish and I’m the water.” Dredge the river and remove the discarded waste that lies on its bed. But watch out for Polypterus. They bite. Even a police investigation must pause until an act of improvised choreography is finished. And this film must end before answers to unasked questions are provided.
Watched this film after reading about the director's latest film, HAPPY HOUR.An hour long novella about a young, alienated high school student, and his relationships with a warm-hearted half-brother and dance partner. Shades of Jacques Rivette in its exploration of arts relationship to reality (namely, how dance reflects Chihiro's inability to connect on a physical level to his brother or dance crush), Claire Denis in its tactile elements and focus on non-nuclear family/community arrangements, and Apichtapong Weersathukul in its hints of magic realism (conversation about pre-historic fish and physical deformity are interwoven throughout.)All in all plays like a talented student work than fully mature piece. Unlike recent East Asian debut features such as Bi Gan's KAILI BLUES, or older classics like REBELS OF A NEON GOD (which this film also evokes) the character and social context are hazily defined at the expanse of ambiance. It is clear that the relationship between the two dancers is queer, but what does that queerness mean in terms of the films rural setting, and its drawing on the metaphor of the possibly mutant, hideous fish that the characters keep encountering? The truncated length of the film is a problem; it seems to end just when a story or narrative was starting to get on its feet. The fact that the film is revealed to be the prologue of unfinished feature only adds to the impression that this is an eye catching calling card more than anything. That's not something to hold against the film: the director immediately establishes themes/ideas of the body, corporeality, and family that he seems to have expanded upon to great effect in HAPPY HOUR.This film is easy to find online, w/excellent English subs. Recommended for anyone looking to find interesting experimental cinema from a rising art house auteur.
