This one has grown on me. Blatantly steals and broadly waters down its basic idea of dehumanizing militarization as genre machinery from some of the best actioners of the 80s (Rambo, Terminator, Robocop, etc) but Van Damme and Lundgren make for one hell of a pairing. Both have a stiff acting style that serves their re-animated Vietnam meatsacks, Van Damme the giant muscled innocent puppy dog and Lundgren the giant muscled genocidal psycho, together forming a dueling yin/yang of America's violent amnesia, its brutality and regret, coming back to blow up a gas station, diner, grocery store or farmhouse near you. The cherry on top is that Emmerich directs this with absolutely zero pretension, it's all kicking and grenades and squibs and one-liners... just pure 90s slomo fire & rain ownage that totally earns its R-rating.Full discussion on ep 177 of my podcast SLEAZOIDS.
One of the most crowd pleasing action movies of the early ‘90s is Roland Emmerich’s Universal Soldier. JCVD vs Dolph. A rumble in the action jungle. Dolph has so much chemistry as he pretty much owns every scene he’s in. Dolph is so badass at playing bad. JCVD seems a bit wooden, except when he’s eating popcorn, but Ally Walker helps JCVD’s character, a lot. She’s a very strong player, and really helps the narrative move at a good pace. There’s supermarket shenanigans, restaurant roughhousing, motel mayhem and gas station boom boom boom. So much fun, even with the very wide open plot holes.
