| 79 |The intense pressure and emotional endurance that a doctor is forced to endure on a daily basis. Dealing with terminally ill patients day in and day out. A very simple plot and all shot in one location. Some very good cinematography, there were a number of shots that I absolutely loved. There is definitely a lot to unpack with this though. How does it impact a person who has to deal with death on a daily basis? Some very touching dialogue that makes me think about life and death. Above all this film made me remember how grateful I am to be healthy and to be alive.
6:30 pmI think Nathan Deming is probably the best local Wisconsin filmmaker. Excluding industry professionals like Orson Wells who were born in Wisconsin. This dude is just simply really damn good at making films. I’m impressed with how professional his work looks in the final product despite being low budget. Out of all the local films I’ve seen, his are the most professional looking. If a two and a half hour long movie that’s entirely filled with long monologues sounds torturous to you then don’t even bother with this one. As much as I enjoyed this movie, it’s kind of a fact that it’s not prioritizing a conventional three act structure. It’s definitely not unfocused though and that’s what I really like about it and what kept me surprisingly really engaged. It’s just a single location film about a palliative care physician taking patients throughout the day who are nearing death. Very candid and character focused and that’s my thing. I also have a fascination with human psychology too so that’s probably why I was so engaged watching this. The biggest downside to this is some of the acting. Not all or even most, just some. You can tell some of the people on camera were not industry professionals. Especially in the first hour or so. It really sucks that I found the assistant guy distracting because of his poor line delivery at many times. His role is a pretty frequent one and he even pops up in the middle of a scene where two actors are talking and I was deep invested in the exchange. I would say most of the acting is good. None however, come close to that guy Deming found on Craigslist for his short “February” who absolutely crushed it. My favorite segments in this were Jared, Gladys, Father Greg of course, and I oddly found Marty’s case to be complexly sad. I really liked this. Add this to your watchlist if it sounds interesting because I think it does a great job at doing what it’s trying to do. This is apparently inspired by Deming’s father who worked as a palliative care physician. In that context it’s honestly a fantastic love letter.
