Richard Jaeckel was a prolific American character actor who appeared in nearly 200 film and television roles between 1943 and 1994, having started his career as a mailroom clerk at 20th Century Fox.
He is best known for his portrayals of tough, resilient characters in Westerns and war films, most notably in The Dirty Dozen, 3:10 to Yuma, and his Oscar-nominated turn in Sometimes a Great Notion.
He was a versatile journeyman actor who balanced a steady output of feature films with significant guest appearances in 1950s and 60s television anthology series and procedurals.
