Kefaya
Kefaya are a London-based collective working across post-punk, psychedelic rock, jazz and electronic music, rooted in collaboration, migration and cultural exchange. Formed by Giuliano Modarelli, Al MacSween and Joost Hendrickx, their name comes from the Arabic word meaning “enough”, associated with grassroots protest movements and the Arab Spring uprisings. From the beginning, Kefaya have explored internationalism, exile, freedom of movement and resistance as lived realities shaping both the music and the collective. Their debut album Radio International was developed through collaborations across India, Palestine, Italy, and Spain conceived as a kind of pirate radio station where music, field recordings and political voices coexist. The Guardian described them as “one of the most intriguing new bands of the year”, and they received Songlines Music Awards in 2017 and 2020. Following this, Kefaya began a long-term collaboration with Hazara singer and activist Elaha Soroor, releasing Songs of Our Mothers through Bella Union, reinterpreting Afghan women’s folk songs through a contemporary sonic language centred on exile, resistance and solidarity. Alongside their work, they founded the independent label Radio International, committed to politically engaged and boundary-pushing music beyond genre. Based in London and shaped by immigrant and diasporic experiences, Kefaya’s music reflects a city where different musical traditions and political histories constantly intersect.
