In March 2019, Gareth Jones and Daniel Miller were heading to a György Ligeti concert at the Barbican. Friends and collaborators for almost 40 years, the pair - as they often do when together in the same city - spent a couple of hours beforehand improvising with modular systems. Unusually, this time they decided to record the session and then, over a pre-concert meal before heading into the Barbican, Gareth asked a question that seems logical after years of working together on recording sessions or remixing other artists: “Are we actually going to make a record together before we die?” The following day Daniel phoned him and suggested they do just that. The result is their series of Electronic Music Improvisations, Vol. 1, Vol. 2 and now Vol. 3. Each release evoking the classic sound of some of the earliest electronic experiments, with the spirit, energy and discipline of improvisation while retaining a feeling of modernity through their constant explorations in electronic music. London-based artist, music producer and engineer Gareth Jones is best known for his pioneering production work with artists such as Depeche Mode, Einstürzende Neubauten, Erasure, These New Puritans, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, Interpol, and Yann Tiersen. Daniel Miller founded Mute in 1978 with the release of his own 7” single, and since then has gone on to nurture and work with artists as diverse as Depeche Mode, Laibach, New Order, Liars, Goldfrapp, Erasure, Telex, Apparat, and CAN.
