About

The Amsterdam-based Oorkaan Ensemble bring explosions of colour and dramatic musical flair to the stage thanks to their unique instrument combination of harp, bass clarinet, bayan and percussion. The Oorkaan Ensemble musicians are all about embracing bold and thrilling musical adventures. They’re not only pushing the boundaries of what music has to offer with their arrangements of classical masterpieces and the array of original compositions penned just for them, they also explore the repertoire of diverse musical cultures. Their staged concerts, Whoop Whoop(s)! (2021) and Gong and the Four Noses (2023) delve into the worlds of Turkish and Indonesian classical repertoire. The results can be heard on their acclaimed debut album Shimmering Dutch newspaper de Volkskrant on Shimmering: "The colours burst from their very first recording! [...] Sliding, scraping, drumming, and clattering, they create fascinating blends of sounds." – Jenny Camilleri The Oorkaan Ensemble is made up of Michele Mazzini (bass) clarinet), Robbrecht Van Cauwenberghe (bayan), Michela Zanoni (harp) and Veysel Dzhesur (percussion) and was founded by Caecilia Thunnissen, artistic director of Oorkaan.
