Kolida Babo
A homegrown, underground modern free jazz artist.
Kolida Babo is the collaborative brainchild of Greek woodwind musicians Socrates Votskos and Harris P, who together repurpose ancient folk instrumentation with abstract electronics. Their mutual passion of Armenian music and regional folk traditions leads to an inspiring fusion of old and new. With their sound weaving between Moog-fronted electronics, mystical free jazz and traditional interpretations. Influenced by British Trip Hop, Greek Folk, and the likes of Jon Hassell & Brian Eno’s Fourth World, Kolida Babo construct an ambient yet potent sound in the context of a modern Greece undergoing a cultural and social transformation. Inspired by the mountains of northern Greece, Kolida Babo shares its name with annual folk rituals the group commenced their recording sessions during. The Armenian Duduk that anchors the project is a double-reeded woodwind instrument made of apricot wood with thousands of years of history. MIC Records released their acclaimed self-titled debut LP in April 2019 and the duo have since played Athens’ CHRONOTOPIA, Madrid’s Archipelago and Kefalonia’s Saristra events.
