A nostalgic, slow-burn opera night.
Piet Heinkade 1, 1019 BR Amsterdam, Netherlands
A knight kills his beloved without recognizing her. In Claudio Monteverdi's Il Combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda, a fatal mistake on the battlefield takes a chilling musical form in which love, guilt, and violence merge into a feverish dream. Under the direction of Richard Egarr, the Orchestra of the Eighteenth Century places Monteverdi's work at the heart of a program filled with poignant Italian Baroque music. Alongside Monteverdi, the concert features work by Carlo Gesualdo, the composer who famously killed his wife and her lover. Soprano Anna Prohaska and tenor Ian Bostridge lead the audience through a labyrinth of memories, while two dancers add a physical dimension to the narrative.
