Das ist er nun, der erste Zombiefilm aus dem Jahre 1932. Dieser herrliche Klassiker behandelt die Thematik natürlich noch vollkommen anders, als es in der heutigen Zeit der Fall ist. Hier sind die Untoten noch keine menschenfressenden Kreaturen, sondern einfach seelen- und willenlose Sklaven. Alles läuft hier auf die Voodoo-Thematik hin, Hypnose und geheime Pülverchen sind des Rätsels Lösung. Keine Viren, oder irgendwelche geheimnisvolle Seuchen, die Tote zu Monstern machen.

For most people this is maybe a three-star movie, and there was a time when I would have agreed. But with each passing year I increasingly think that this ultra-cheap, ultra-slow, ultra-creaky Bela Lugosi vehicle is one of my favourite movies. No other movie looks and sounds like this. No other movie feels like this.
What a special movie. Never really seen anything like it. I couldn't tell what was due to a low budget, what was due to ineptitude, or what was due to brilliance. Occasionally it feels like all three are holding hands and dancing ring around the rosie around you. I'm too interested in this movie not to eventually find out the exact balance but for now I'm content to live in that mystery.
