Madeleine en Neil willen gaan trouwen op een plantage ergens op het eiland Haiti. Beaumont, de eigenaar van de plantage, wordt echter ook verliefd op de mooie Madeleine en vraagt aan de medicijnman Legendre om een drankje voor hem te brouwen waarmee hij haar voor zich kan winnen. Helaas verandert Madeleine na het drinken van het brouwsel in een emotieloze zombie en Beamont moet zo vlug mogelijk een tegengif zien te vinden.

For most people this is maybe a three-star movie, and there was a time when I would have agreed. But with each passing year I increasingly think that this ultra-cheap, ultra-slow, ultra-creaky Bela Lugosi vehicle is one of my favourite movies. No other movie looks and sounds like this. No other movie feels like this.
What a special movie. Never really seen anything like it. I couldn't tell what was due to a low budget, what was due to ineptitude, or what was due to brilliance. Occasionally it feels like all three are holding hands and dancing ring around the rosie around you. I'm too interested in this movie not to eventually find out the exact balance but for now I'm content to live in that mystery.
