Mingus Big Band
A nostalgic, raw big band night.
The Mingus Big Band performs exclusively the music of celebrated American composer, bassist, and activist Charles Mingus. Created by Sue Mingus, this 14-piece ensemble features new arrangements of Mingus compositions in a larger format than he was often able to organize during his lifetime. The group encourages deep exploration and evolving interpretations of Mingus’ music, providing a platform for individual artistic expression similar to Mingus' own Jazz Workshop projects. Drawing from a rotation of New York City's top established and rising musicians, the band is known for its spontaneous and creative performances. With seven Grammy nominations and a win in 2011, the ensemble continues its legacy with the legendary Mingus Mondays residency.
