Mingus Big Band
A nostalgic, raw big band night.
The Mingus Big Band exclusively performs the music of celebrated American composer, bassist, and activist Charles Mingus. Established by Sue Mingus, this 14-piece ensemble features arrangements of Mingus's compositions in a larger format, fulfilling a vision he wasn't always able to organize during his lifetime. The group's dynamic structure allows for deep exploration and evolving interpretations of the music, offering a platform for individual artistic expression similar to Mingus's own Jazz Workshop projects. Drawing from a rotating lineup of New York City's top established and emerging musicians, the band is recognized for its creativity and spontaneity. With seven Grammy nominations and a win in 2011, the Mingus Big Band continues its legacy through the renowned Mingus Mondays residency at The Pocket.
