Violent Femmes formed in 1981 as an acoustic punk band playing on the streets of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Drawing early influence from Gene Vincent and the Blue Caps as well as the Velvet Underground, the group aimed to rock harder than any other acoustic act. After a spontaneous performance outside a Pretenders show led to an invitation from Chrissie Hynde to open that night, the band gained significant momentum. This eventually led to a record deal and their eponymous debut, which notably went platinum eight years after its release. Over four decades later, the band continues to be a major force in the alternative music scene, cited as a key influence by artists ranging from the Pixies to Pink.
